Accused spy’s lawyer to ask for adjournment as he reviews documents

HALIFAX – The case of a Canadian navy intelligence officer accused of espionage returns to court today and will likely be adjourned again.

Sub-Lt. Jeffrey Delisle of Halifax is charged with communicating information that could harm national interests.

His lawyer, Mike Taylor, says he will ask for another adjournment because he is still going through information.

Delisle was denied bail in March and has been in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility since his arrest in January.

A broad publication ban was ordered covering evidence presented at his bail hearing, and Taylor says the process is slow because security agencies have to review all information before it is handed over to him.

He was charged under a section of the Security of Information Act that was passed by the House of Commons after the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.
