Closure of hotel at Grand Canyon for renovation postponed

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. – A planned months-long closure of a landmark hotel at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for a major renovation is being postponed.

The Arizona Republic (https://goo.gl/WDyCHD ) reports that the three-month closure of El Tovar that had been scheduled to begin in January is now being postponed until early 2018.

Bruce Brossman is director of sales and marketing for the hotel’s operator, Xantera (zan-TAYR’-uh) Parks and Resorts. He says some project approvals hadn’t been obtained, putting into question whether the work could be finished on schedule.

The planned work include repainting, carpet replacement and electrical and plumbing upgrades.

Xanterra operates El Tovar under contract with the Park Service.

The hotel opened in 1905 and is one of the oldest in the National Park Service system. It has 78 guest rooms.
