National Ballet of Canada to stage ‘The Tempest,’ ‘Manon’ in 2014/’15 season
TORONTO – The Canadian premiere of a dance version of “The Tempest” and the long-awaited return of “Manon” will highlight the National Ballet of Canada’s next season.
The ballet company says “The Tempest” by Alexei Ratmansky, based on the Shakespeare work, will be presented with “Being and Nothingness” by principal dancer Guillaume Cote starting in May 2015.
“Being and Nothingness” is a four-part piece set to music by three-time Oscar-nominated composer Philip Glass.
Meanwhile, “Manon” by Kenneth MacMillan will begin in November, marking the first time the show has been onstage since 1998.
The National Ballet’s 2014/2015 season also includes the return of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Christopher Wheeldon, which will also tour to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in April 2015.
“Nijinsky” by John Neumeier is also returning.
In June, the ballet company will return to The Music Center in Los Angeles with “Romeo and Juliet” by Ratmansky.
Other shows in the next season include “The Nutcracker” as well as “… black night’s bright day …” by James Kudelka and “The Sleeping Beauty” by Rudolf Nureyev.
The company is also developing several projects for upcoming seasons, including the new full-length ballets “The Winter’s Tale” and an adaptation of the novella “Le Petit Prince.”
