Winnipeg to host Canada-U.S. women’s soccer friendly May 8 at Investors field
WINNIPEG – The Canadian women’s soccer team will play a friendly on May 8 in Winnipeg against the United States.
Winnipeg is one of the host cities for FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015, but Canada won’t play any of its games in the Manitoba capital.
Canada just lost to the Americans 1-0 in Texas on Friday and hasn’t managed to beat the world’s top-ranked team since 2001.
Canadian midfielder and Winnipeg native Desiree Scott says they’re inching closer and she can’t wait to put on a show for fans in her hometown.
Meanwhile, a new study predicts Women’s World Cup soccer events this year and next in Canada will create about $337 million in overall economic activity.
Six provinces will get a share, ranging from a high of $80 million in Alberta to a low of about $26 million in Manitoba. Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and New Brunswick will also host tournament games.
