Canadiens name former NHLer Gerard Gallant new assistant coach

MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens have hired former NHL forward Gerard Gallant as an assistant coach.

The move is the latest in a series of changes made by the Canadiens since Marc Bergevin was named the club’s new general manager last month.

Assistants Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur were fired last week, a day after Michel Therrien was hired as head coach.

A native of Summerside, P.E.I, Gallant spent 11 seasons in the NHL, nine with the Detroit Red Wings and two with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 615 games, he recorded 480 points with 1,674 penalty minutes.

Gallant, 48, is a former head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Most recently, he’s been behind the bench for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, leading the team to a Memorial Cup title in 2011.

In three seasons, Gallant led the Sea Dogs to a stellar 161-34-9 record.
