Heavy rainfall in Poland causes flooding in capital

WARSAW, Poland – Hours of rainfall overnight in Poland flooded streets and metro stations in Warsaw, causing significant disruptions Wednesday morning to people trying to reach work by car or public transportation.

Three metro stations were closed, and televised images showed firefighters pumping water out of them before they were reopened.

Some roads were covered in water several inches (centimetres) high, forcing cars to drive very slowly. In some cases, cars drove on the sidewalks, at slightly higher elevations, to avoid the flooded streets.

Tunnels in Warsaw were also impassable.
