Leafs goaltender Andersen suffers upper-body injury in Olympic qualifier

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen suffered an upper-body injury in an Olympic qualifying game on Friday.

Andersen left the game after colliding with a Danish teammate in a game against Slovenia. The Leafs said he will be flown back to Toronto to be examined by team officials.

The severity of the injury was initially unclear.

Toronto acquired Andersen from Anaheim in the off-season and signed him to a five-year contract extension worth $25 million. He is the key piece of the Leafs’ upgrade in goal that also includes the recently acquired Jhonas Enroth.

The injury could derail plans for Andersen to backstop Team Europe at the World Cup in Toronto. Europe opens the tournament Sept. 17 against the United States.
