Art collector in huge German find has 60 more works at house in Salzburg, Austria
BERLIN – A spokesman for a reclusive elderly German art collector who kept more than 1,400 works at his apartment in Munich says he has another 60 pieces at a house in Salzburg, Austria.
Stephan Holzinger said Tuesday that Cornelius Gurlitt’s caregiver ordered the works — including pieces by Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso — to be secured as a precaution against break-ins and theft, news agency dpa reported.
He said that happened Monday and that the works are being examined by experts to determine whether any of them were looted by the Nazis — which does not initially appear to be the case.
The works in Munich were seized by authorities investigating a tax case in 2012; officials have been checking whether hundreds of pieces were seized by the Nazis.
