UBC report into sexual assaults recommends cameras on campus to improve safety

VANCOUVER – An interim report released by the University of B.C. recommends the installation of cameras at the Vancouver campus to address safety concerns after six sexual assaults.

The report says the university will hold public forums and seek community input over the expansion of electronic surveillance at key points including transit hubs.

As part of the process, the university will develop a policy about privacy considerations.

Recommendations to improve safety for students, staff and faculty also include the development of a mobile phone app and more lighting.

The community is invited to provide feedback on the recommendations until Feb. 25.

Six women were assaulted on campus at night between April and October 2013, but the lone male suspect described in each case has not been apprehended.
