Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign veteran Canadian safety Craig Butler as free agent

HAMILTON – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have significantly bolstered their secondary through free agency.

The Ticats signed veteran safety Craig Butler on Tuesday, the first day of CFL free agency.

The 25-year-old native of London, Ont., spent the last three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, helping the team beat Hamilton in the Grey Cup game in November.

The six-foot-two, 196-pound Butler was a second-round pick, No. 12 overall, by Saskatchewan in the 2011 CFL draft out of Western Ontario.

Butler appeared in 53 regular-season games with Saskatchewan, registering 135 tackles, 11 interceptions, four sacks and six fumble recoveries.

Last season he led the Riders with 60 tackles while adding four interceptions.
