Federal prosecutors in San Diego drop fraud charges against former Border Patrol union boss
SAN DIEGO – Federal prosecutors in San Diego have dropped corruption charges against the former president of the Border Patrol union.
A U.S. district judge agreed to drop the charges Tuesday against Terence J. Bonner, who was accused of defrauding his union out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Prosecutors had accused Bonner of submitting expense vouchers for meals, car rentals, books and other nonunion activities while travelling for personal reasons.
The 2012 indictment says his false claims covered visits to his family and a mistress in Chicago and attending hockey games and other sporting events.
Bonner was president of the National Border Patrol Council from 1989 until he retired in 2011.
He vigorously disputed the charges and faced a hearing Wednesday to determine what evidence could be used at trial.
