Bronze sculpture of Stompin’ Tom Connors in the works for Sudbury, Ont.
SUDBURY, Ont. – A bronze sculpture of Stompin’ Tom Connors will soon be among the tourist attractions in Sudbury, Ont., a place immortalized by the late singer in one of his most popular songs.
Legend has it that Connors, who died in March 2013 at age 77, wrote “Sudbury Saturday Night” in the city’s Townehouse Tavern back in 1965.
A local committee has commissioned a life-sized bronze sculpture of Stompin’ Tom by area sculptor Tyler Fauvell, and it’s hoped it will be unveiled later this year.
Fauvell says he was honoured to be chosen to take on the project honouring the gravelly voiced, toe-tapping musician.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to raise the $50,000 needed for the sculpture and its ongoing maintenance.
