Angry moose soon to reproduce may have excuse for pedestrian abuse

SMITHERS, B.C. – Residents of Smithers, B.C., are being urged to give a morose moose a wide berth, at least until after it gives birth.

Smithers conservation officer Flint Knibbs says the creature was first spotted Wednesday near homes in the northwestern B.C. town.

He says it seemed to be acting normally so officials decided not to intervene.

But the same moose, which has now been determined to be pregnant, was later spotted following a passing pedestrian and appeared to kick her in the back of the head with its front hoof.

Fortunately, the woman was not seriously hurt, but a video of the incident, posted online, shows the encounter had the potential to be very nasty.

Moose are profuse around Smithers, and Knibbs says the grumpy mother-to-be didn’t appear to be acting aggressively, so no action is planned. (CFTK)
