Damage tallied as separate marinas hit by fire, vandal, on B.C. south coast

VANCOUVER – Several boat owners at two marinas on the South Coast should be checking with their insurance companies after unrelated overnight incidents.

A fire at Park Isle Marine in Sooke, west of Victoria, has destroyed three boats and damaged a building in the boat yard.

All three vessels were on land, having work done at the boat yard when flames broke out just after 5 a.m. Friday, quickly spreading to a nearby shop building.

No one was hurt and a cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Vancouver Police say a 31-year-old man is in custody after several boats were vandalized late Thursday night at the Coal Harbour marina in downtown Vancouver.

Officers had to use a police dog and the emergency response team to arrest the man when he barricaded himself in the engine room of one boat after smashing it and several others with a large hook, causing significant damage. (CFAX, CKNW)
