Don’t tell scamming ‘delivery company’ when you’ll be out of the house: Kamloops RCMP

KAMLOOPS – A Kamloops resident has alerted the police to a scam that involves a fake delivery company asking when residents will be home.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release that the scam involves the victim receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from a delivery company, and advising them of a pending package delivery.

The caller is looking for the best day for delivery, and the victim will typically say something like "This Monday is not good, I have to work and nobody will be here to receive the package," according to Shelkie. Now the caller knows the best time to break-in to the victim's home.

“Generally, delivery companies will leave a note on your door,” Shelkie says. “If you get a phone call, hang up and call back the legitimate delivery company.”

Shelkie warns residents to not trust the number on your caller ID, because scammers can use apps to look like a legitimate company. Sometimes the scammers have the name and address of someone who lives there.
