Defending Olympic champion Maelle Ricker crashes out of snowboard cross event

KRASNAYA POLAYNA, Russia – Defending Olympic champion Maelle Ricker has crashed out of women’s Olympic snowboard cross competition.

The West Vancouver, B.C., rider fell in her quarter-final heat and was unable to catch her opponents, even after several other riders crashed.

Ricker won Olympic gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The 35-year-old suffered a wrist injury last month that required surgery.

Dominique Maltais of Petite-Riviere-St-Francois, Que., advanced after winning her quarter-final heat.
