Nicholson asks his officials to probe retired general’s moving fees

OTTAWA – The defence minister is asking how his own department approved in-city moving expenses of more than $72,000 for a former general who is now a Liberal adviser.

In a statement, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson says the bill for retired lieutenant-general Andrew Leslie’s move from one Ottawa house to another appears grossly excessive.

Nicholson says Leslie, who provides defence advice to the federal Liberals, must explain why he believes the moving expenses are reasonable.

Leslie told CTV News, which aired the story Saturday based on a government document, that he did not break any rules and that most of the moving expenses went to real estate fees.

CTV did not say how it obtained the document, but Nicholson’s office says it was released under the Access to Information Act.
