3 university students dead, 10 feared trapped after building’s roof collapses in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea – A South Korean official says at least three university students died and about 10 others were feared trapped after the roof of a building collapsed.

An official at the state-run National Emergency Management Agency says the three students were pronounced dead at hospitals. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media.

The official said about 1,000 students from Busan University of Foreign Studies were having a freshman orientation Monday in the southeastern city of Gyeongju. About 450 were in a building when its roof collapsed.

He said many managed to get out by themselves, and about 20 were later rescued and taken to hospitals. He didn’t provide further details.

Repeated calls to the university were unanswered.
