Owner says London theatre hit by mid-performance ceiling collapse will reopen next month
LONDON – The owner of a London theatre whose ceiling partially collapsed in the middle of a performance says the venue will reopen next month.
Almost 80 people were injured, seven seriously, when chunks of plaster and wood fell from the ceiling of the century-old Apollo Theatre on Dec. 19.
Nica Burns said Tuesday that the venue will re-open March 26 with the upper gallery roofed in so experts can continue to examine the ceiling. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
Burns told London’s Evening Standard newspaper that she hoped to open with a stage adaptation of vampire movie “Let the Right One In.”
“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” which was on at the Apollo when the ceiling fell, is moving to a new venue.
