Opinions divided at forum over slave auction block’s future

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Leaders of one Virginia city are hearing from residents about what should be done with a slave auction block that stands on a busy downtown corner.

The Free Lance-Star reports last month’s violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville rekindled a longstanding debate over the stone in Fredericksburg. The City Council held a public forum Saturday to solicit opinions about either moving it to a museum or leaving it and adding interpretive panels.

The newspaper reports opinions were divided but tempers never flared as speakers shared their views. Residents can also weigh in online .

The City Council is scheduled to discuss the issue Tuesday at a meeting.
