Mortar attack strikes former insurgent stronghold in Iraq, killing at least 15 people
BAGHDAD – Authorities in Iraq say a mortar attack has struck a residential area of a town south of Baghdad, killing at least 15 people and wounding more than 50.
The attack happened Thursday night in Musayyib, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) south of Baghdad.
A police officer and two medical officials say five mortars hit a market, a residential building and a parking lot. It wasn’t immediately clear who fired the mortars.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to speak to journalists.
Musayyib is a former insurgent stronghold.
Iraq is experiencing a rise in violence to levels unseen since the worst of the country’s sectarian bloodletting began to subside in 2008.
