B.C. government can’t show value for billions spent on health care: report

VICTORIA – B.C.’s auditor general says the government can’t demonstrate if it’s getting good value for the billions of dollars it pays doctors.

Russ Jones says in a report that in 2011-2012, physician costs of $3.6 billion consumed nine per cent of the province’s total budget.

The report makes six recommendations, including ways to improve oversight of physician services.

The Opposition New Democrats say that despite increasing medical services premiums for British Columbians, the government can’t prove if high-quality medical care is being delivered.

NDP health critic Judy Darcy calls the report a damning indictment of how the Liberals are managing health care.
