Vancouver exhibit to offer rare overview of Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Art Gallery says its upcoming Lawren Harris exhibition will offer a rare overview of the Group of Seven artist’s career.

Featuring 137 paintings, oil sketches and drawings — including 82 works from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s own collection — the exhibition will trace Harris’s path from representational art to abstraction.

Harris was “the pioneer who brought abstraction to Canadian art,” said the show’s curator, Ian Thom.

The works on view date from the early years of the 20th century to the mid-1960s, the gallery said. One of Harris’s sketchbooks will be displayed for the first time.

Born in Brantford, Ont., in 1885, Harris moved to Vancouver in 1940, becoming a strong supporter of the Vancouver Art Gallery. He died in the city in 1970.

“Lawren Harris: Canadian Visionary,” organized by the VAG, runs from March 1 to May 4.
