Man evades Vernon police by ramming police car
VERNON – Police are looking for a man and his car after an officer narrowly avoided injury when his vehicle was rammed by a suspect early Sunday morning.
Police were called to a disturbance outside a home in the Willow Shore Crescent area near Head of the Lake Road shortly before 2 a.m. July 8. According to a release by Vernon North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett, a man was heard yelling and screaming while banging on the door of a home.
Arriving officers were too late to find the man but Brett says the man left in a small grey four-door vehicle. No further description of the vehicel or man was offered in the release.
An officer spotted a vehicle matching that description a short time later at Highway 97 and Head of the Lake Road where it was stopped. When the officer tried to approach the suspect vehicle, the driver drove into the police vehicle causing "significant damage."
"After colliding with the police vehicle, the suspect vehicle took off at high rates of speed back down Head of the Lake Road," Brett says. "There is no such thing as a routine traffic stop and each stop is considered high risk. This officer is fortunate he was not injured during this incident."
The driver and his vehicle have not yet been found and the incident remains under investigation. If you witnessed this incident and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-546-3028.
