Man who tried to help ex-NFL WR Sam Hurd buy drugs in major case gets prison time
DALLAS – A co-defendant in the drug distribution case involving former NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd has received 41 months in prison.
Toby Lujan was sentenced Thursday after admitting to one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Authorities found Lujan driving with $88,000 in cash. They say he made several calls to arrange a meeting for Hurd with someone posing to be a drug trafficker.
That meeting ended in Hurd’s December 2011 arrest at a Chicago-area steakhouse.
U.S. District Judge Jorge Solis credited Lujan for quickly co-operating with prosecutors and staying out of trouble after his arrest, unlike Hurd.
Hurd was given 15 years in prison last year for his attempts to buy and sell large amounts of cocaine and marijuana.
Lujan said he was “deeply remorseful” for what happened.
