Allegations TransAlta manipulated electricity market disappoint Redford

CALGARY – Alberta Premier Alison Redford says she is disappointed by allegations that TransAlta Corp. manipulated the electricity market by shutting down power plants to drive up prices.

The province’s electricity market watchdog claims TransAlta engaged in the anti-competitive conduct in 2010 and 2011 during peak electricity demands.

The Market Surveillance Administrator has filed a complaint with the Alberta Utilities Commission.

TransAlta denies the allegations and has filed its own complaints with the commission about the administrator.

Redford says she has been informed about what’s going on, but she won’t comment until there is a decision from the utilities commission.

She says she still has confidence in Alberta’s deregulated electricity market, but is open to making improvements if it is found not to be working.
