Anna Netrebko calls off plans to play Marguerite in ‘Faust’ in Germany, London, Vienna

BERLIN – Anna Netrebko has pulled out of plans to play Marguerite in Charles Gounod’s “Faust,” saying she’s decided that the role isn’t right for her.

The Russian soprano was due to play the part at London’s Royal Opera House, in Vienna and in Baden-Baden, Germany later this year.

However, she said in a statement Friday: “After much consideration and intensive preparation, I have come to the conclusion that the role is not right for me.”

Netrebko said she was “very sad” to be disappointing her fans and hoped they would “understand the difficult decision” she had to make.
