Fire risk forces city to close part of Knox Mountain to vehicles

KELOWNA – The hot weather of late, the dry conditions and the risk of an interface wildfire has the city closing the top half on Knox Mountain in Kelowna to vehicles.

The city says in a media release vehicles won’t be allowed past the gate at the first lookout as of Saturday, July 21, until conditions improve.

You can still get to the top of the mountain by foot or on a bicycle.

“Natural parks, grass, trees and underbrush can easily ignite when the conditions are this dry,” parks services manager Blair Stewart says in the release. “While the park is still open to visitors, this closure helps reduce the risk of accidental human-caused fires.”

Knox Mountain Drive won’t reopen until city staff determine it is safe to do so.
