Alberta’s Redford curtails use of government planes amidst travel to-do
EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Alison Redford has grounded government planes forout-of-province travel pending a review.
Redford has asked auditor general Merwan Saher to look into the entire government plane service to make sure taxpayers are getting value for money.
Redford faced renewed calls from opposition parties during question period Tuesday to pay back $45,000 she spent to fly with an aide to Nelson Mandela’s funeral in December.
The trip included first-class flights and the use of a government plane when commercial flights were available.
The premier of Nova Scotia made the same trip for under $1,000.
Redford also billed taxpayers more than $9,000 last year to fly with her daughter and bodyguards back from a vacation in Palm Springs to attend former premier Ralph Klein’s funeral.
