Sheriff denies paper’s request for school shooting video
ANDERSON, S.C. – Authorities have denied a newspaper’s request for video related to a shooting at a South Carolina elementary school that left a 6-year-old boy dead.
The Anderson Independent-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/2e6Midw ) the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office this week denied its request for video and supplemental reports on the Sept. 28 shooting at Townville Elementary School.
The newspaper reported that Lt. Sheila Cole said a provision of state law exempts the release of materials that could constitute “an unreasonable invasion of personal privacy.”
South Carolina Press Association executive director Bill Rogers called the exemption “ridiculous” in this case because authorities have already identified a suspect and made an arrest.
A 14-year-old boy has been charged with killing his father before driving to the school and opening fire, hitting a teacher and two students. Six-year-old Jacob Hall died of his injuries.
