Costa Rica’s ruling party presidential candidate drops out of runoff election
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Costa Rica’s ruling party presidential candidate says he is dropping out of a runoff election and will stop campaigning because opinion polls show overwhelming support for his contender.
Johnny Araya made the announcement Wednesday after a poll published by the University of Costa Rica showed opposition candidate Luis Solis leading 64 per cent to 21 per cent ahead of the April 6 runoff election.
Araya says he doesn’t want to spend any more money on his campaign.
The vote will still be held and Araya will appear on the ballot because the country’s constitution doesn’t allow for candidates to drop out.
