Weather a worry as temperatures rise

There isn’t much any one can do about it, but weather is definitely on the minds of many residents in the Thompson-Okanagan as temperatures get back into the 30 Celsius range this week and risk of wildfires rise.

“It’s worrying us all,” says Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist.

“For the next week or more, we’re into a pattern of hot, dry sunny weather. It’s going to dry things up,” he says.

Weekday highs are forecast in the low 30s C, but Lundquist says by the weekend temperatures will rise to the mid-30s C.

Although no thunderstorms are forecast for today, the next few days could see development of some late day activity.

“There’s always a chance a little, weak system could move in late in the day and set things off. They can be hard to detect,” Lundquist says.

North winds are anticipated over the next two days, with wind gusts of 40 km/h or less. Lundquist says meteorologists have their eyes on next week, when the high pressure system is expected to break down.

“That’s something we’re watching for, but everyday is a new equation,” he says.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
