Scam e-mail threatening porn site proof, asking for Bitcoin impacting locals: RCMP
RCMP are warning of a scam where victims are blackmailed for Bitcoin by e-mails, threatening to reveal they have been visting porn sites.
Numerous reports have been made to the Kamloops RCMP detachment about the fraudulent emails, spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said in a press release.
It claims to have proof the recipient has been visiting pornography-related websites and unless the person forks over $7,000 worth of untraceable bitcoins, the “proof” will be mailed to all the person’s contacts.
What seals the deal is the scammer often has the person’s correct e-mail password, Shelkie said.
She advises recipients to ignore the email and change all their passwords immediately, while making sure not to open any attachments related to the e-mail.
