Poland launches cheap housing program for families

WARSAW, Poland – Poland’s prime minister has announced a new program to provide cheap housing for families on low income — the second project the conservative government has launched to support large families.

Beata Szydlo said Friday the “Home Plus” program will be largely financed by public funds and construction of new apartment buildings should begin in 2018.

Szydlo’s Law and Justice party, which advocates a return to traditional Catholic values, promised before elections last year to improve the living standard of large families. The new program will benefit families that cannot afford to buy homes or get bank loans.

Earlier this year, the government launched a program granting families monthly payments of 500 zlotys ($125) for all second and subsequent children. The opposition says the programs are too costly.
