Islanders score seven times in third period en route to win over Canucks

VANCOUVER – Matt Martin’s goal at 10:04 of the third period proved to be the winner as the New York Islanders posted a dramatic 7-4 comeback victory over the Vancouver Canucks Monday night.

Josh Bailey, Ryan Strome, Calvin de Haan, Frans Nielsen, Anders Lee and Cal Clutterbuck also scored for the Islanders (25-33-9), who rallied from a 3-0 second-period deficit with seven goals in the third period, including four in the first 6:22.

Chris Higgins, Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Chris Tanev scored for the Canucks (29-28-10), who suffered their 12th loss in the past 14 games.

Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made 20 saves for the win as Eddie Lack 21 shots for the Canucks.

Vancouver led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 following the second before allowing the Islanders back in it.

New York’s first three goals came on power plays and Nielsen’s goal came right after another Vancouver penalty had expired.

Higgins opened the scoring on a power play at 15:16 as he put in a backhand after Yannick Weber’s slapshot hit the post.

Henrik Sedin put the Canucks ahead 2-0 at 4:52 of the second period as he put a shot in off New York winger Cal Clutterbuck from the behind the net. The goal was Sedin’s first in 24 games.

Kesler gave the Canucks a 3-0 advantage about five minutes later as he put in Kevin Bieksa’s rebound off the goalpost. Alex Burrows drew an assist, earning his 300th NHL career point.

Bailey put the Islanders on the scoreboard at 1:13 of the third period while Jensen was still serving a slashing penalty that carried over from the second period.

Then Strome and de Haan scored man-advantage markers 22 seconds apart to make if 3-3.

Nielsen put the Islanders ahead 4-3 just under three minutes later as he put in a shot from the wing.

The crowd let out a huge roar of relief after Tanev brought the Canucks even at 9:54.

Martin, however, gave the Isles the lead only 10 seconds later on a backhand from the slot, and Lee padded New York’s lead just a minute and 44 seconds later.

Lee put in Okposo’s rebound off Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis, who had tended the goal while Lack was caught out of position following the initial save on the first of three successive New York shots.

Clutterbuck closed out the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute.
