VICTORIA – Angry residents from ferry-dependent communities along the British Columbia coast are converging on Victoria for a rally.
BC Ferry Coalition spokesman and rally organizer Jef Keighley (KEEF’-ley) says bus loads of demonstrators will gather on the steps of the legislature at 11:30 a.m.
He says they are demanding a halt to cuts slated to hit numerous ferry routes next month.
The coalition says it is taking its fight to Premier Christy Clark, arguing her Liberal government has failed to listen to what coastal communities want from BC Ferries.
Keighley says scheduled service cuts will affect 20 per cent of the population and the high cost of travel is harming business and driving a wedge between families and friends.
Transportation Minister Todd Stone insists the cuts must proceed because the ferry corporation has to find $19-million in savings. (CFAX, CKAY)
