Manitoba wants panel ruling on province’s claim StatsCan undercounted population
WINNIPEG – Manitoba wants the federal government to appoint a panel to rule on whether Statistics Canada undercounted the province’s population in the last census.
The province says it is getting $100 million less than it should in federal funding each year because the agency undercounted by 18,000 people.
Finance Minister Jennifer Howard says the stakes are high and the federal government has a responsibility to help resolve the dispute.
She says the 2011 flood — one of the largest in the province’s history — contributed to inaccurate population figures.
Howard says a panel made up of a representative from Manitoba, Statistics Canada and a neutral chair could settle the dispute.
Statistics Canada has said it used a methodology agreed to by all provinces and its census numbers are accurate.
