City must rehire officer accused of using excessive force

DANBURY, Conn. – A Connecticut city has been ordered to rehire a police officer who was fired after being accused of using excessive force during an arrest.

The News-Times reports the state arbitration board found there was no evidence that former Danbury Officer Daniel Sellner used excessive force.

Sellner was fired in January 2014 after city officials determined he pushed a handcuffed youth.

The city also pointed to Sellner’s checkered disciplinary record. He was retrained after misusing a stun gun on a motorist and was suspended in 2013 for making a lewd comment to a teacher.

Police union officials say the youth refused to co-operate and there wasn’t enough evidence to fire Sellner. The union president says Sellner is excited to return to work.

Mayor Mark Boughton declined to comment.
