Ex-Rutgers student convicted in webcam spying case due out of jail after serving 20 days
NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The former Rutgers University student convicted of using his webcam to watch his roommate kiss another man is due to be released from jail after serving 20 days of a 30 day sentence.
Twenty-year-old Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON’ RAH’-vee) reported to jail last month even though he could have remained free during an appeal of the case. He is to be released Tuesday morning.
Like other county jail inmates in New Jersey, he received 10 days of automatic credit upon reporting to serve his time.
He was convicted of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and other crimes in March in the case that stems to September 2010.
His roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide days after he and a companion appeared in the live video that Ravi briefly streamed.
