Saskatchewan passes motion to support Northern Gateway pipeline
REGINA – The Saskatchewan legislature has passed a motion supporting construction of the Northern Gateway pipeline, but the vote was not unanimous.
Premier Brad Wall says the pipeline would help get oil to port in asafer way than by rail or truck.
The 1,200-kilometre line would transport 525,000 barrels a day from Alberta’s oilsands to a marine terminal on the British Columbia coast for export to Asia.
The Opposition New Democrats did not support the motion.
NDP Leader Cam Broten (BROH’-tin), who supports the Keystone XL pipeline to Texas, has concerns about Gateway.
Broten says the mountains present different challenges for Northern Gateway and there are precarious shipping routes on the West Coast.
He notes that the B.C. government has said it’s not prepared if there is an oilspill.
