VERNON – Construction of a new sports facility beside Okanagan College is now visibly underway.
Elected officials and community members visited the site Wednesday for a ground breaking ceremony.
Excavation equipment is now on site preparing the land for construction. This first step will wrap up in December, at which time the ground will be left to sit for the winter.
Construction of the $7.53 million project, which passed in a referendum this spring, will go to tender next spring. The facility is expected to be complete by the fall of 2014.
The facility will address Vernon's lack of a regulation-sized track, and allow the city to host events like the B.C. Summer Games and the B.C. Senior Games. It will include a regulation-sized synthetic track, a regulation-sized synthetic turf field, a natural turf field, seating for four hundred spectators, a classroom, changing rooms and bathroom facilities.
