Man arrested after shoving match with mayor in Quebec City

QUEBEC – The protest of a municipal bylaw controlling demonstrations in Quebec City resulted in one arrest after a shoving matching involving Mayor Regis Labeaume.

Const. Catherine Veil of the Quebec City police says a man will be charged with assault after the tussle inside the council chambers.

Television footage shows a man intercepting Labeaume as he left the council chambers, with one of the mayor’s entourage intervening.

The protester was wrestled away by police and arrested.

About 100 demonstrators gathered at city hall today to protest the bylaw, which requires organizers of demonstrations to provide their itinerary in advance.

It also bans camping in public spaces and access to parks between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

City council was summoned to vote on the measures in advance of massive student demonstrations planned for Montreal and Quebec City on Friday.

After the vote, in which the bylaw passed, protesters entered city hall banging pots and pans until police moved them outside and ticketed 21 of them.
