Officers move to restrict Montreal protest against police brutality

MONTREAL – Montreal police moved quickly today to crack down on an annual protest that has a history of getting out of hand.

A crowd of demonstrators gathered outside a busy north-end subway station to denounce police brutality.

But police declared the protest illegal because they weren’t provided with an itinerary.

Officers _ some on horseback and others in riot gear _ cordoned many of the protesters onto a side street and worked to load them on to waiting city buses.

A demonstration against police brutality has been held in Montreal for 18 straight years.

More than 200 people were arrested at last year’s protest _ which was also cut short by police.
