BoC governor says 2014 started slower than expected, new norm may be coming

OTTAWA – The head of Canada’s central bank says the economy may undershoot his expectations in the first few months of this year, and the slowdown may not be all weather-related

Bank of Canada governor Stephon Poloz (POH’-lahz) also says there may be a new norm of slower growth for Canada and the world.

That’s partly because of a hangover from the financial crisis and partly because some Baby Boomers are retiring while the rest are saving more.

Poloz says global demand for the products the Canada has to sell is softer than would be expected and could remain so for some time to come.
