Brazil police detain 4 in Rio gang rape; 6 now in custody

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian authorities have detained four more teenagers suspected in a gang rape on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Police said Thursday that three of them are 17 years old and one is 18. A total of six suspects are in custody while four are still at large, nine days after the attack at a bar in the Sao Goncalo suburb.

The crime angered women’s rights activists, especially because police took the 34-year-old woman to the station in the car along with her alleged attackers. The victim told local media it wasn’t the first time she was gang raped by drug traffickers.

In May, a 16-year-old girl was gang raped in a Rio slum, a case that horrified Brazil after images of the assault spread on social media.
