Second jury fails to reach verdict on sex charges against Calgary psychiatrist

CALGARY – A Calgary jury has been unable for a second time to reach a verdict on sexual assault charges against a psychiatrist relating to two of his court-appointed patients.

Dr. Aubrey Levin (LEH’-vihn) was convicted on three counts of sexual assault by a jury in January of last year and sentenced to five years in prison.

But that jury could not reach a verdict on four other charges.

The Crown retried Levin on two of them and the jury has again been unable to reach a consensus.

Alberta Justice Beth Hughes told court she had no choice but to declare a mistrial.

Levin, who is 75, is appealing his earlier convictions.

Crown prosecutor Shane Parker says he is considering proceeding with a third trial against Levin, who immigrated to Canada from South Africa and was frequently used by the courts to assess people and provide expert opinions at hearings.
