Canada’s Ramin Karimloo gets rave reviews for Broadway debut in ‘Les Mis’

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Ontario-raised stage star Ramin Karimloo has made a triumphant debut on Broadway.
The actor-singer is getting rave reviews for his leading role as Jean Valjean in the New York production of “Les Miserables,” which opened Sunday night at the Imperial Theatre, with some saying he’s the highlight of the show.
The New York Times, for instance, called his performance “sterling” and praised his “fiery intensity,” “full-throttled vocalism” and “nuanced colouring” as Valjean.
The Hollywood Reporter described his voice as “a powerful instrument but also achingly sweet.”
And NBC New York called him “captivating and charismatic.”
Karimloo, who was born in Tehran and grew up in Peterborough and Richmond Hill, Ont., also earned critical praise for starring the recent smash Toronto run of the show.
Several other Canadians are also starring in “Les Mis” on Broadway, including Caissie Levy as Fantine, Samantha Hill as Cosette and Cliff Saunders as Mr. Thenardier.
Cameron Mackintosh’s 25th anniversary production of the Boublil and Schonberg show features fresh orchestrations, staging and direction.
