Former US Rep. Patrick Kennedy working on memoir about addiction, to be published in 2015

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy is working on a book about his struggles with addiction and mental illness, to be published next year.

Penguin Random House imprint Blue Rider Press announced Monday the book will be called “A Common Struggle.”

The 46-year-old Kennedy served eight terms in Congress as a Democrat from Rhode Island before stepping down in 2011. He’s the son of the late Edward Kennedy, the longtime senator from Massachusetts.

Patrick Kennedy had previously signed with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for a memoir about addiction but called it off in 2011, saying he was too busy. Blue Rider spokeswoman Aileen Boyle says the new book is “very different,” citing Kennedy’s three years of sobriety and recent work on mental health initiatives.
