India’s economy grew 7.6 per cent in last fiscal year

NEW DELHI – India says its economy grew 7.6 per cent in the fiscal year that ended March 31 and a stronger 7.9 per cent in the last quarter of the year, keeping its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Tuesday’s data from the Central Statistics Office is in line with the government’s earlier estimate in February. The economy grew 7.2 per cent in the previous fiscal year.

The data will be a boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, which swept to power two years ago on the promise of overhauling the economy.
