KEY WEST, Fla. – The United States Coast Guard has spotted a vessel that may belong to four boaters who failed to return home from a snorkeling trip off Key West.
Chief Petty Officer Nyx Cangemi says a Coast Guard plane spotted the boat Wednesday afternoon about 40 miles northwest of Key West. A rescue ship is expected to reach the boaters by 5 p.m. Cangemi couldn’t immediately confirm their identities or conditions, but the plane crew reported four people waving from the boat.
A Coast Guard news release previously said the boaters left Banana Bay Resort in a 25-foot boat on Tuesday for a snorkeling trip about six miles north of Key West.
A concerned family member contacted the Coast Guard Tuesday evening. Missing are 48-year-old David Thompson, 28-year-old Adam Kelley, 15-year-old Joshua Thompson and 11-year-old Evan Thompson.
